Hawaiian Applique

Well, I took a break from my meme – I think I’m finally deciding that I’m just not good at things I have to do every day! ha ha! However, i’ll finish it, I think it’s kind of a fun one – it’s just going to take me longer than 30 days!
Here’s what I’ve been up to tho:

I took a fabulous Hawaiian Applique class at Holly’s Quilt Cabin in south Denver and boy was it fun! I just love the shapes and the method that you create the “snowflake” pattern. This is going to be a pillow and I’m going to do two of them. The other one will be the print on top of the brown. The print is a sari my Mother in law got from Indonesia, isn’t it awesome.

It looks better in person – there’s not enough contrast in the photograph, but if you click on it, you can enlarge it and see the applique better.

I LOVE needle-turn applique, it’s so rewarding. I guess because I do so much embroidery that’s SO much slower than this, it just seems really quick and fabulous!

Oh, and my hubby said “but you know how to do that, why take a class?”. First, I learned two new needle-turn techniques (one for points and one for inside curves) that made it all worthwhile – and second, the way the Hawaiian patterns are made is fascinating. I’ll do a follow up article with some information about it.
